lounge chair / studio monoya

→(buy)

The lounge chair, which commands a distinct presence in the room, is an original piece planned and developed by monoya specifically for this hotel. While taking inspiration from chairs crafted in 18th to 19th-century England, we aimed to create a quiet sanctuary for solo reflection that still maintains a natural connection to the rest of the room. Rather than just assembling parts to support the body, this chair uses the contours of its side and back panels to carve out a small, intimate space around you. While it offers a comforting sense of enclosure, actually sitting in it reveals a surprisingly spacious feel, allowing anyone, regardless of body type, to relax in comfort.

Its seat height is designed with deliberate ambiguity—slightly taller than a typical lounge chair, yet lower than a standard armchair. This nuance is intentional, ensuring it doesn't dictate how you should spend your time, whether you are reading a book or listening to music. Our goal was not to create something flashy or instantly eccentric, but to craft a place with a subtle, quiet allure—a spot where you naturally find yourself sitting, again and again.

monoya(Kita Ward, Kyoto City)

Based in Kyoto, this practice operates as both a curated shop and a design studio.

The shop brings together intuitively collected objects and places them in new contexts, inviting fresh ways of seeing and interpreting them. Drawing on this sensibility, the studio engages in design and creative direction centered on the relationship between objects and space.
