coat hooks / studio monoya
→(buy)The coat hooks installed on the wall right near the guest room entrance were born through a collaboration between Kyoto-based ceramic artists Tamayuki Morimoto and Hajime Ichi, alongside monoya. By combining two distinct parts, they crafted four types of hooks, each revealing a unique expression depending on how they overlap, their orientation, as well as the type and application of the glaze.
I believe there is a slightly special meaning to the act of hanging something on a wall. Rather than placing it on a floor or a shelf, you are letting it exist there against gravity. That is precisely why, for this hotel, we chose coat hooks over hanger racks. We adopted ceramics as the material because we wanted them to look less like tools for pure function, and more like small objects on the wall. What shapes our daily lives isn't just large pieces of furniture or special artwork. Where and how you hang your coat or bag—I believe it is the accumulation of such small choices that creates a scene unique to each individual.

Based in Kyoto, this practice operates as both a curated shop and a design studio.
The shop brings together intuitively collected objects and places them in new contexts, inviting fresh ways of seeing and interpreting them. Drawing on this sensibility, the studio engages in design and creative direction centered on the relationship between objects and space.
